Tasting Notes

The 2022 Rosemary’s Vineyard Pinot Noir is a deep, elegant and mineral-driven California Pinot Noir with considerably more savory complexity than a typical fruit-forward Central Coast Pinot.

The nose opens with juicy cherry, blackberry, pluot, lilac, dried herbs and subtle tobacco, followed by more savory notes of crushed stone, forest floor, spice and cedar.

On the palate, you'll find raspberry, pomegranate, black cherry and dried strawberry, with layers of tobacco, herbs and earthy minerality. The texture is silky and polished, with ripe tannins and bright acidity carrying the wine through a long, persistent finish.

Jeb Dunnuck describes the wine as the most mineral-laced and savory of Talley's 2022 Pinot Noirs, highlighting raspberry, dried strawberry, crushed stone, floral and spicy notes.

⭐ Critic Scores

96 Points - Jeb Dunnick

🌊 A Vineyard With an Ocean View

Rosemary's Vineyard is the coolest vineyard site Talley farms. It overlooks the Pacific Ocean and surrounds the home of Rosemary Talley, the family matriarch. The cool conditions help preserve acidity while allowing the Pinot Noir to develop intense flavor.

🍇 Planted in 1987

The vineyard was planted by Don Talley in 1987, and one of its blocks contains Wadenswil clone Pinot Noir planted on its own roots—an increasingly rare combination in California viticulture.

🪨 Shaly Loam Soils

The vineyard's Lopez very shaly loam soils, combined with its cool climate, are an important part of the wine's character. Talley says the site produces thicker-skinned berries while maintaining unusually high acidity, contributing to the wine's combination of darker fruit, elegance and length.

🍷 Thoughtful Winemaking

The grapes were hand harvested at night, destemmed and fermented with native yeast in small open-top bins. The wine then spent 16 months in French oak, 39% of which was new, before being bottled without fining or filtration.

🌱 Sustainable

The vineyard is sustainably farmed, and the wine is made without fining or filtration.

📦 Small Production

The 2022 production was only 1,270 six-packs, or approximately 7,620 bottles.

🍽️ Food Pairings

This is a Pinot Noir that can handle considerably more substantial food than you might expect.

I'd recommend:

  • 🦆 Duck confit or duck breast
  • 🍄 Wild mushroom risotto
  • 🥩 Grilled ribeye
  • 🐓 Roasted chicken with herbs
  • 🐖 Pork tenderloin
  • 🐑 Grilled lamb
  • 🍗 Roasted quail
  • 🧀 Aged Gruyère or Comté
  • 🍝 Mushroom pasta
  • 🥘 Lentil and duck confit stew

The combination of acidity, savory notes and fine tannins makes it particularly good with mushrooms and earthy dishes. Talley itself recommends wild mushroom risotto and grilled ribeye.
