The nose opens with ripe blackberry, wild blueberry and dark cherry, followed by layers of cracked black pepper, smoked meats, black olive tapenade, dark chocolate and graphite. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and generous, with concentrated dark fruit, espresso, cocoa and savory spice. Its mouth-filling texture is balanced by refined tannins and remarkable purity, leading to a long, concentrated finish.

The wine is crafted by John Duval, who spent 16 years as winemaker for Australia's iconic Penfolds Grange before coming to Washington in 2003 to collaborate with Long Shadows. His expertise with Syrah makes Sequel particularly exciting for lovers of Rhône-inspired wines.

The 2020 is sourced from three distinct Columbia Valley growing areas:

• Boushey Vineyard, Yakima Valley: Contributes freshness and vibrancy.

• Red Mountain: Provides ripeness, concentration and structure.

• Bacchus Vineyard: Adds intense color and aromatic complexity.

The 2020 Vintage

The growing season was characterized by low yields, a hot summer and an extended autumn hang time. As temperatures moderated toward harvest, ripening slowed, helping preserve natural acidity while allowing the grapes to develop outstanding flavor and texture.

Winemaking

The grapes undergo several carefully managed fermentation techniques to build richness and structure while preserving Syrah's delicate character.

Approximately 30% whole-cluster fermentation adds complexity and backbone. Submerged-cap fermentation and the Australian technique known as rack and return help develop color, texture and concentrated flavor.

The wine then ages for 18 months in French oak barrels, 65% of which are new, adding layers of spice and complexity while supporting the wine's powerful fruit profile.
