Tasting Notes

The 2021 Bionzo is a rich, concentrated and elegant Barbera with much more depth and structure than the typical bright, easy-drinking style associated with the grape.

The nose opens with blackberry, black cherry, blueberry, violet, licorice, graphite and dark spice, with intriguing hints of incense and mint. On the palate, it is broad and silky, combining concentrated dark fruit with Barbera's naturally vibrant acidity. Notes of black cherry, blackberry, dark chocolate, balsamic herbs and mineral earth emerge as the wine opens.

The finish is long, savory and mineral-driven, with polished tannins and subtle spice from the French oak. Vinous specifically describes the 2021 as a brooding, concentrated Barbera with blackberry, pebbles, incense, licorice, graphite and dark spice.

⭐ Critic Scores

An independent 2025 review from IntoWine also gave the 2021 92 points, describing black raspberry, black cherry, balsamic and mint aromas with firm tannins, good acidity and a long finish.

Interesting Facts

🍇 From an Exceptional Single Vineyard

Bionzo is the name of the vineyard/hill in Costigliole d'Asti, southeast of Alba. La Spinetta has been producing this wine from the site since 1998.

The vineyard is approximately five hectares, with calcareous clay and marl soils, southern exposure and an elevation around 250 meters.

🌳 Extremely Old Vines

This is one of the strongest selling points.

The Bionzo vines are more than 60 years old, with some sources describing the vineyard as having vines approaching a century in age.

Older vines naturally produce smaller quantities of fruit, but can provide greater concentration and complexity.

🍷 100% Barbera

There is no Nebbiolo hiding in the blend. This is pure Barbera, allowing the vineyard and winemaking to define the wine.

🪵 Serious Oak Aging

The 2021 received approximately 16–18 months in French oak barriques, followed by additional time in stainless steel and bottle before release.

That extended aging helps explain why this Barbera has a considerably more polished and structured personality than inexpensive examples of the grape.

🌱 Organic Farming

La Spinetta farms the vineyard organically. The estate emphasizes vineyard health and even uses horses rather than tractors in some vineyard work to reduce soil compaction.

🍷 Barbera With Serious Aging Potential

Barbera is famous for high natural acidity, but Bionzo combines that freshness with concentrated fruit, oak structure and mature-vine complexity.

🍽️ Food Pairings

This is a fantastic Italian dinner wine.

I'd recommend:

  • 🥩 Grilled ribeye
  • 🍝 Tagliatelle with Bolognese
  • 🍄 Mushroom risotto
  • 🥩 Braised beef
  • 🐑 Lamb
  • 🦆 Duck with cherry or balsamic reduction
  • 🍕 Truffle or mushroom pizza
  • 🍖 Osso buco
  • 🧀 Aged Parmigiano-Reggiano
  • 🧀 Pecorino
  • 🥓 Salumi and charcuterie

The combination of acidity + dark fruit + savory character makes it particularly good with rich foods.

Why We Love It

This is a great bottle to use when someone says:

"I love Barolo, but I don't want to spend Barolo money."

It's obviously not Barolo—it's a completely different grape—but it has enough concentration, structure, acidity and savory complexity to appeal to serious Piedmont wine drinkers.

The 2021 Bionzo is especially compelling because you get:

60+ year-old vines + single vineyard + organic farming + 100% Barbera + 16–18 months French oak + 92 Vinous.

And unlike some highly extracted Barberas, this still retains the vibrant acidity that makes Barbera such a fantastic food wine.
