Notes from the Winemaker

Aiurri is the character of the Rioja Alavesa. Small plots of old vines that grow in the shelter of the Toloño mountain range. This area benefits from the intermingling of continental and Atlantic climatic conditions. The vineyards primarily consist of 
Tempranillo, with some Graciano and Grenache.
 

Climate conditions
 The 2021 vintage was characterized by abundant rainfall during the winter, 12% above average in the Leza area. We worked with cover crops to improve the soil structure and increase the microbiological richness of each plot. Bud break took place during the month of April without any weather or plant health incidents. The organic management of the crop and the good weather made it possible to treat the vineyards with natural products. The mild summer temperatures preserved the acidity and freshness of the grapes. Harvesting began on September 21 and finished on October 12.


 Character of Leza
 The Sierra de Toloño mountains shape the landscape, resulting in small vineyard plots with diverse clones and varying sun exposures and orientations, which promote gradual grape ripening. Its mountainous topography acts as a natural barrier 
to protect the Leza wine-growing area from adverse weather conditions. Loam soils with a high limestone content and a good amount of organic matter. Aiurri 2021 is a blend of grapes from six distinct plots in Leza: Vallejón, Espino, Losares, San Andrés, 
Guardaviñas, and Viejete. These plots are individually cared for to capture the best of each vineyard and its environment. 


Elaboration by plots
 The Aiurri 2021 grapes were harvested by hand after an initial selection of bunches in the vineyard. Later, in the winery, a double selection was made of clusters and berries. The vinification by parcels allows us to increase our knowledge of each vineyard and its environment, giving the wine its particular characteristics. We work with the utmost respect with spontaneous fermentations and gentle and very controlled extractions in French oak vats and concrete tanks. Aiurri 2021 has spent sixteen months of aging in French oak barrels of different sizes. After the blending of plots, the wine was aged in concrete tanks for three months. Finally, it was clarified with natural egg whites and bottled in the spring of 2023.

Title to, and ownership of, all alcoholic beverages passes from a Licensee to the purchaser at the licensed retail premises or warehouse and state it is purchased in and the purchaser takes all responsibility for shipping it from the licensed retail premises or warehouse to his/her home state. By arranging for transportation of the alcoholic beverages, the retailer is providing a service to and acting on behalf of the purchaser. By utilizing this service, the purchaser is representing that he/she is acting in a fashion compliant with his/her local and state laws regarding the purchase, transportation, and delivery of alcoholic beverages. The purchaser represents that he/she has obtained any required permission, paid any required fees, is working through properly licensed intermediaries where required, is legally entitled to take possession of alcoholic beverages, and is legally entitled to take quantities ordered and once again authorizes that he/she is 21 years of age.

International Shipping

Generally, we do not ship internationally, as some countries have restrictions on wine/sake shipping. Please send an email to elizabeth@inthecru.com before purchasing. In all cases, local taxes and shipping will be paid by the purchaser.

Signature Policy

For successful delivery of your wine or sake on the initial try, we highly advise selecting an address where an individual aged at least 21 is present to sign for the package. Legally, wine cannot be left without such a signature. Unfortunately, we are unable to refund shipping fees for packages returned due to the absence of an adult for signing. Shipments cannot be sent to APOs, FPOs, or P.O. boxes. Additionally, deliveries will not be made to individuals deemed intoxicated by the driver.
