94 Points - Tim Atkins

"Making the most of what Agustín Santolaya considers the best vintage since 2001, the regular Roda release marries Tempranillo with 5% Graciano and 4% Garnacha from the Rioja Alta and Oriental sub-regions. Full-bodied but not overpoweringly so, this is layered and well structured, with scented 40% new wood, serious dark berry fruit and a balsamic lift. Modern yet traditional at the same time."

Notes from the Winemaker

It represents one of the two profiles of the ripening of Tempranillo: the red fruit
At Roda we look for the vineyards that have matured that year with the sensation of red fruit, with the expression of the aromas present on the edge of the glass, ready to be felt immediately, with notes of sweet spices and a pleasant freshness. On the palate, red fruit is the protagonist, with a fresh, long, silky and continuous volume mid-palate.

We came from a very rainy 2018 but the winter was very dry and without cold. The fires in Cantabria in the middle of winter were in the news. The vineyard sprouted without crying and very timidly at the end of March. It rained 30/40 mm at Easter, which changed the situation (Easter falls very late, at the end of April). Budding is happy.

Despite the drought, the vineyard yields well, with a lot of samples. Flowering arrived on normal dates around June 10. The drought continued with alternating temperatures. The year was very dry but the vegetation was very good.

At the end of June came a brutal heat wave with 2 days in a row above 40ºC, June 28 and 29. The fruit set was irregular and the harvest was very small, with a lot of millerandage. There was some minor rainfall after the heatwave.

The heat episode was repeated at the end of July with temperatures around 37 degrees for another four days. By Santiago, July 25, veraison was already visible. It seemed incredible that the vineyard was doing well after the two heat waves. There were few grapes in the vineyard.

On August 1, 40 mm fell in Haro. The ripening was excellent and a magnificent harvest arrived in terms of quality and low in production. Some rains between September 16 and 22 complicate the situation somewhat.

An excellent vintage with 506 mm. of precipitation.
